The Very Hungry Caterpillar
We have shared the story as our focus book. We learned about the life cycle of a butterfly – egg – tiny caterpillar – big caterpillar – cocoon – butterfly!
We have looked carefully at the patterns on a butterfly’s wings – they are symmetrical! We have made symmetrical patterns lots of different ways.
We made or very own ‘name caterpillars’, counting how many letters are in our name then making the caterpillars body the same size, we then wrote a letter of our name in each segment of the body! We noticed that some names are very short and some were long! We were very excited at the arrival of 10 ten caterpillars to our nursery. We will observe them over the next few weeks changing into butterflies.

Groundwork Trust – West Boldon Lodge
Nicola from the groundwork trust worked with us in our nursery. We helped her label the different parts of a tree and a flower. She was astounded at the knowledge and language already known and used by the children. She shared a story of a giant sunflower seed, we learned about its life cycle.
She then showed us how to make our own plant pots using newspaper and a special tool. We were really good at this! Then, in our forest, we added soil and a seed to our pots. Nicola said we have to water them everyday and keep them inside for about 2 weeks or until they begin to develop a shoot!
