Fit for Finish

 

Year 6 complete a 1.4 km run to celebrate the Great North Run.

Internet Safety

Year 6 were visited from our local community police women. She taught them all about staying safe on line and the laws surrounding it.

Computing

Year 6 have been learning about data packages. We talked about how data is transferred across networks and demonstrated how the paths will travel various pathways. Due to the IP address the package will get to the right computer and that computer con organise it in the right order.

Saint Vincent de Paul Centre

We visited the SVP Centre in Newcastle to look at how people put their faith into action at the Justice and Peace Refugee Project. The refugee project offers a warm welcome and provides basic support for those seeking asylum and refuge in our community. The Refugee Project has offered a caring heart, a listening ear and a helping hand to our regions most vulnerable people for over twenty years. We live in a troubled world where people are having to flee from persecution and danger on a daily basis. Your support can help bring Christs healing love into some very difficult situations.

  

Rosary- October

October is the month of the rosary in our church. It highlights the significance of the rosary as a powerful prayer and devotion within our faith.

  

DT- Cooking

For our DT topic this term we have been investigating Cooking and Nutrition. Our aim was to produce a healthy vegetable curry. We examined ingredients and identified potential allergies and intolerances and also thought about hygiene rules. After we made the curry we then evaluated the taste.

  

A Snowy Day at St. Oswald’s

We had so much fun outside today, we made snowmen called Bob and Tilly.

Science- Electricity

Today during our Science lesson we began a science investigation using a series circuit. Year 6 made a hypothesis regarding what would happen when we add more cells to a circuit. We made observational drawings using the correct scientific symbols and noted down our results in a table.

  

Geography

In our geography topic this half term we have been learning about Biomes. As part of this learning we have been thinking about what the rainforest does for us. This week we investigated the death of Carlos Mendes who was killed because he believed we need to protect them. The children looked at the possible culprits and together decided who they thought was the most likely suspect.

 

School Sports Partnership

As part of the School Sports Partnership we were invited to take part in an athletics competition at Temple Park Leisure Centre. The year six children were all involved in this multi-skills event and competed against many other schools in the borough.

Knife Crime Awareness Discussion

Suzanne from Northumbria Police came to our class today to discuss knife crime. We talked about the laws and statistics surrounding knife crime.

Newcastle University

Year 6 visited Newcastle University this week to think about how learning another language is beneficial. The students who are currently on various language course inspired our children to keep up their love of learning a different language. We also toured the university to explore its interesting buildings.

 

Design and Technology

The children in Year 6 have been designing and making their own mobile phone case. We have discovered all about the design process and the importance of having a target market. To make a unique case they though about using the correct design criteria.

  

Art

This week Year 6 were very lucky to have a local artist teach their art lesson. The children were encouraged to create a surrealistic picture using the medium of collage.

PE- Hockey

 

World Book Day 2026

Science

Year 6 enjoyed Science week this year, they planned an experiment to test the question ‘Does toast always land butter side down?’ The children discovered that the thickness of the toast effects the outcome-what an interesting scientific experiment!

Passion Play

Year 6 re-enacted the crucifixion of Jesus to remind us of the sacrifice he made for us all. Their performance encouraged prayerful reflection during this important time.

Fit for the FInish 2024

  

Fit for the Finish is all about encouraging more children to get active and what better way to inspire them than by drawing on the excitement and build up to the iconic Great North Run!

Mass at St. Oswald’s Church

Yesterday, year six celebrated mass at our parish church to recieve the eucharist. Father Keith spoke during his homily about how the children should be the best they can be. He discussed with the children about the importance of the coming year and that we should be able to look back at our behaviour next year and know that we have tried our best to be a loving and forgiving person. 

Democracy Day

As part of our British Values -Democracy Day all the children voted for positons such as head boy/girl and also important roles such as school council and Mini Vinnies. Lots of children in year six decided to apply for the role of head boy/girl and read out their speeches in the school hall infront of the whole school. After counting all the votes from all 222 children the winners are….

  

Newcastle Reform Synagogue

As part of our S.M.S.C. (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural) studies, the children in year 5 and 6 went to visit the Reform Synagogue in Newcastle. Members of the community talked to us about Judaism and showed us their synagogue. The leaders talked about the religious practice held in the synagogue and in their home, the Torah scrolls and demonstrated the use of religious objects. We really enjoyed this interesting and informative outing.

Science Experiment

Today we planned and carried out a science experiment to investigate how excercise effects our pulse rate. The children decided to run for varying distance to find out how this might then raise our bpm. We checked our bpm after intervals of one minute to clearly see how our bpm rises with continuous exercise. We wrote up the experiment in our science books which included a hypothesis and a graph to show the change to our pulse during exercise.

DT- Cooking and Nutrition

Trip to Safety Works- Newcastle

esterday year six visited Safety Works in Newcastle. The centre is managed and operated by Tyne and Wear Fire Rescue Service. It provides realistic and interactive scenarios which enable practical learning in a safe and controlled environment, to raise awareness of how to stay safe. The sessions aim to make pupils aware of not taking unneccessary risks, everyday dangers and how to avoid accidents and injuries. We met representatives from The RNLI, Police/Fire service and Nexus. Topics such as peer pressure, anti-social behaviour and road safety were discussed with the children.

Class Celebration of the Word

Our year six children who planned the Class Celebration of the Word this week decided to focus on the life of John the Baptist. We listened to the Word (Matthew 3:1-11) and responded by placing a pebble in our hands and reflecting upon the scripture. To do this we held the pebble in our hand and as it warmed, it helped us to feel closer to God. As our mission this week we were reminded of the actions of John the Baptist and the children were asked how they can be the best they can be this week.

The Month of Mary- October

October is the month of Mary because it is a time when we pray the rosary to Our Lady. During this month we try to draw closer to Jesus and and Mary by reflecting on the mysteries.

Science -Electricity

The children have begun their new topic this week, which is Electricity. We discovered that to build an effective series circuit there must be no breaks. We also carried out an investigation using the electrical componets to find out what would happen to the brightness of the bulb if we keep adding more cells. The children enjoyed this very practical activity.

English – Poetry

During yesterdays English lesson we discussed how performance poets use tone, volume, actions and intonation to enhance their poems. The children were asked to practise the poem ‘Windy Nights’ then perform it to the class using the performance tools.

Year 6 Advent Wreath Service

 

Careers Week

We were visited by members of the ambulance service today. The children had already prepared some intriguing questions about the role of a paramedic. It was such an interesting experience after the children discussed the job, they were then were allowed to look inside the ambulance.

More than Dance

As part of our Year of Hope celebrations the children in year 6 were invovled in a liturgical dance class. Our dance focused on the theme of ‘Exile’ which reminded us that God will always be with us where ever we go. He is our anchor and guide throughout our lives.

Stations of the Cross

We are now in the period of Lent and have been weekly following the stations of the cross. They are a series of 14 images which depict the key events in Jesus’ passion from his condemnation to his death.

Sat’s Revision

We have been working extremely hard in year six over the past few weeks, one of the tools to help us revise is to use the online year 6 website. The site consists of 100 online practise papers and revision videos and guides.

The Glasshouse

We visited the Glasshouse in Newcastle to listen to the Northern Sinfonia this week. It was incredible experience which took the children through time, from 1100-2024, to experience ten pieces of classical music.

Celebration of the Word

The year 6 children planned their own Celebration of the Word this week, they chose to focus on the theme of Hope to link with our special jubliee year. We listened to Psalms 11:18 then reflected upon our hopes for the world, school and our family. Three children palnning the Celebration also decided to gather in our library and chose the objects placed on the focal point.

Year of Hope

We are celebrating 2025 as the Year of Hope which is a jubilee year, themed Pilgrims of Hope, this marks a special year of grace and spiritual renewal.

Poetry -Windy Nights

The children performed the poem Windy Nights in groups, they worked on their skills of intonation and expression to enhance the execution of the task.

Internet Safety and Knife Crime Talk

P.C. Suzanne visited year 6 to discuss knife crime and internet safety. Firstly she talked about what is a crime and what is a weapon then proceeded to encourage class discussions by giving the children scenarios. 

Temple Park Spring Garden Visit

During our visit the children were tasked with making a rain garden- this was to slow the flow of water from nearby roofs to concrete. This is to help with flooding in our community. Another group of children foraged for sticks and then made a bug hotel. What an interesting visit! 

Year 6 Trip to the Mosque

As part of our Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural studies our year 6 class were given the opportunity to visit the Al Azhar Mosque in South Shields. The visit was hosted by members of the community and allowed the children to discover many facts about the Muslim faith which included lots of  information about The Five Pillars of Islam. 

Design and Technology

The year 6 children have been asked to design and create a mobile phone case in their DT lessons this half term. Fristly we thought about the design process to create a case which has a target market and is aesthetically pleasing then we began to measure out and cut the fabric; ready to join in the coming weeks.

R.E.

The children were asked to develop a liturgical dance showing how Jesus bring together may different people with different faiths with different gifts. Using the scripture given we broke down each line and matched movements to them, thinking about how we can use our bodies to convey unity.

Catholic Social Teaching – Solidarity

Today we chose to explore the Catholic Social Teaching value of Solidarity. We used our participation sheet to create discussions of what this is, then wrote a prayer asking God to help those in need. We decided to go to our prayer garden to reflect and share our wonderful prayers.

Healthy Minds

Ashley from Healthy Minds visited year six yesterday to discuss transition. We talked about how moving on can be worrying and how we can help ourselves to cope with these changes.

Mathematics

We enjoyed a very practical maths lesson recently. The children discovered how units of measure have changed over many years, they discovered that hands were used to measure many years ago. Each group was asked to measure their hand and arm span and thought about the relation between the two.

Quidditch

We enjoyed a visit from Enrich Education today, the sports leaders taught the children how to play Quidditch. The children were split into house groups and competed to earn the Quidditch Cup. The children were highly enegaged in this activity as there was fierce competition. The overall winners were Aiden house-well done!

Faith In Action

The year six children are planning theri final piece for their Faith In Action award. Some have chosen to create collages, power points or stain glass window effects pictures.

Class Celebration of the Word

For our class celebration of the word this week, the children chose the theme of transition. We gathered in the prayer garden and listened to John 14:25-31, this scripture reminded us that the Holy Spirit will guide us when moving on. The children asked all the children in the class to write a prayer asking God for guidance and strength in the coming months. We also used bubbles to remind us of the wonderful memories we have had at St. Oswald’s.

Road Safety

In readiness for our transition to our new senior schools the children in year 6 have been learning about road safety and being out and about in the community. They discussed their route to school and awareness of dangers that exist in our environment.

Catholic Social Teaching- Stewardship

We discussed the meaning of “Stewardship”. We quickly recognised the part of the word steward and know that we are stewards of the world that God has created for us. We are responsible for looking after the world and keeping everyone and everything thing in it safe. We thought of our own freeze frames to show this.

  

Catholic Social Teaching- Participation

We also discussed the meaning of “Participation”. We thought about how the word means to tkae part in an action, then discussed how we can do this in our world. The Catholic Social Teaching principle of Participation shows that we have a duty to participate fully in our society.
