Science – Materials Experiment
During our Materials topic in Science, we looked at different ways of separating materials and looking at the different properties of the materials and the tools used to separate them.
DT – Pretzels
As part of our DT topic this term we have been investigating Cooking and Nutrition. Our aim was to produce soft pretzels, inspired by our work on the Anglo Saxons. We examined the history of them, the ingredients needed and identified what food groups were included and catered for. After we made the pretzels, we then evaluated the taste. We loved them!
Hoops For Health
Players from the Newcastle Eagles came into school and worked with Year 5 on their basketball skills. The players were very impressed with the class and their performance. They also worked with the children in the classroom about how to live a healthy lifestyle, looking at having a healthy diet, sugar content in products, oral hygiene and mental health and wellbeing.
Remembrance
To remember the soldiers who died, Year 5 wrote their own Remembrance poems and songs, using the tune of ‘Remember Me’ from the film Coco.
Holy Rosary
As we are now in the month of October, Year 5 have been praying the Holy Rosary. This helps children reflect on the lives of Mary and Jesus, deepen their faith, and use prayer as a tool for comfort.
Year 5 Mass
Year 5 went to mass for worship. They listened to the gospel and reflected on the Word of the Lord throughout, with some receiving Holy Communion.
Online Safety Workshop
Year 5 were visited from our local community police. She spoke to the class about staying safe online and the laws surrounding our online behaviour.

Year 5 Celebration of the Word – Monday 14th October 2024
Y5 led the whole school celebration of the word. First, we gathered by setting the focal point and pausing and reflecting. We thought about a time when we have helped the less fortunate and when we have walked in the footsteps of Jesus. Next, we sang the alleluia to introduce the gospel which was taken from Mark 10:17-30. It taught us to give our riches to the poor and to share with others. Jesus taught us that when we do that, we are rich in heaven and being a positive example to others. We responded to the gospel by thinking ways in which we can share this harvest. We ended our worship with prayers asking God for guidance and support. We sand Lord of the Harvest to help us reflect on the gospel reading.
