Inclusion

St. Oswald's Catholic Primary School is a fully inclusive school where the needs of all of our children are central to our educational philosophy. We aim to develop the social, cultural, intellectual, aesthetic, physical, moral and spiritual attributes of each and every child in our care.

The pursuit of excellence is at the heart of our school and forms an integral part of the education we offer which enables all pupils to develop to their full potential. Children of all backgrounds and cultures are welcomed, valued and supported to allow all to make the very best progress they can.

We aim to remove barriers to learning and participation to promote the development of all children as independent learners. We understand and acknowledge that children have individual educational needs and require personalised strategies for learning and participation. We endeavour to meet individual needs as we know that children benefit from a range of different teaching approaches and experiences.

 

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Our school recognises there are particular groups of pupils whose circumstances may require additional consideration by those who work with them to support their special educational need or disability. We work with parents and other professionals including: health visitors, school nurse, speech and language therapists, the Inclusion Service, Healthy Minds, Emotional Resilience Team and Educational Psychologists to ensure that we fully understand a child’s needs and make the best provision for them.

There are four broad areas of SEND in the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Code of Practice:

  • Communication and Interaction
  • Cognition and Learning
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties
  • Sensory and/ or Physical Difficulties

We maintain the principles of fairness and equity across our entire curriculum, in all aspects of the school day and in after-school activities.

Children with special needs follow a provision map and an individual support plan which is agreed and reviewed with parents and carers. Where appropriate, some children have an Education, Health and Care Plan, which is developed in conjunction with parents and carers, partner professionals and the local authority.

Supporting Pupils at St. Oswald's Catholic Primary

All pupils at St. Oswald's are encouraged to have high expectations and do their very best. We recognise some children may need extra support to help them achieve and this is provided in the classroom as 1:1 and small group support by the class teacher and teaching assistant. It may also be provided outside of the classroom as specialist intervention.

Children are assessed and supported through Intervention across the curriculum. They are supported to develop their own strategies to become independent learners and make good progress across the curriculum. Children who may need academic support are not only children with SEND.

Transition

All children are fully supported to make a smooth transition between key stages and from primary to secondary school. Opportunities are provided for pupils to meet new teachers and become familiar with new classrooms and expectations. Some children may require additional support during the transition, and the school uses a range of strategies to support. 

For pupils moving to secondary school, communication takes place between primary and secondary teams to ensure that all relevant information is shared and the transition is centred around the needs of the child, including those with SEND.

Extra Curricular Activities

All pupils at St. Oswald's Catholic Primary School have equal access to after school clubs, enrichment activities, educational visits and residential experiences.

Educational visits and activities are carefully planned to ensure that all pupils are included and supported where necessary so that no child is marginalised.

Residential activities are fully risk assessed and additional support is provided where required so that pupils with SEND can participate fully.

We also work closely with a number of external agencies from health, social care and education to ensure children and families receive the support they need.
